Ways to Help You Manage Stress During Quarantine

Got stress?

There’s no doubt about it, we are living in stressful times. This Covid-19 pandemic has majorly affected all our lives and is causing unique stresses for each of us.

Stress is your body’s natural response to harmful or threatening situations. A chemical reaction occurs enacting a “fight or flight” response in your body to protect yourself from whatever is coming- whether real or perceived.

Stress can effect everyone in different ways and can present with physical, emotional or mental symptoms.

Symptoms of stress may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Cold symptoms
  • Insomnia
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Worrying
  • Racing thoughts
  • Negative thoughts
  • Becoming easily agitated
  • Loneliness
  • Depression
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Nail biting
  • Procrastinating
  • Overeating or not eating enough

While feeling stressed may make you feel like things are out of your control, you can still take control. Stress management is important, especially right now during this time of quarantine. Social distancing may make you feel isolated, but we are all in this together. To support you, we’ve compiled a list of ways to help you manage stress during quarantine.

Yoga

Yoga is scientifically proven to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Multiple studies have shown that regular yoga practice decreases stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression. It’s focus on breathing and meditation are instrumental in developing stress management skills.

Exercise

Physical activity produces your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. While some refer to this feeling as “runner’s high,” any workout can get you just as pumped. The focus of your workout can also distract you from the things you are worrying about. Studies show that daily exercise helps improve overall mood, sleep and give you a sense of control.

Healthy Eating

While so much can feel out of your control, it is important that you find things you can control like your food intake. Preparing and eating healthy, well-balanced meals is important in stress management. Meal preparation takes focus and planning that can take your mind off stress. Eating regularly keeps blood glucose levels stable, which is associated with better mental performance. The foods we eat play an active role in our mental, physical and emotional health: healthy fats promote increased brain function; fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals essential for combating stress; fiber-rich foods are associated with greater alertness.

Self-Care

While you have this opportunity of extra time, make sure you are making time to care for yourself. Doing things that make you happy, promote feelings of self-worth and help reduce feelings of stress. Practice or learn a new hobby, watch a favorite TV show or movie, take a long bath, or put on a facial mask. Even little things like this can make all the difference in how you feel about yourself.

Sleep

Sleep is always essential, but it is especially important when battling increased stress. Quality sleep is important for optimal health. Studies have proven that high levels of stress truly effect sleep, but do not feel hopeless! Set a routine and stick to it. Avoid being on your phone or watching TV right before trying to sleep. Try meditation and relaxation techniques at bedtime. You can also consult your doctor for help, if insomnia continues.

Stay Connected

Social Distancing during quarantine might be causing feelings of isolation. It is important to stay connected with friends and family as much as possible. Make phone dates with loved ones or start a group chat about positive news. Using apps like Marco Polo or Zoom can help you get face time with others safely and help promote feelings of self-worth.

Seek Professional Help

If you are struggling to manage your stress and you feel too overwhelmed, it is important to seek help. There are many opportunities available right now for remote counseling and therapy. Reach out to your primary care physician for a referral or suggestion.

Stress can have a major impact on your body and mind, but it does not have to control you. Take the time to care for yourself and practice stress management. You will be glad you did!

Everything You Need to Know About Exfoliating

Facial masks, scrubs, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. What do all of these have in common? Exfoliating!

Exfoliation is part of a healthy skin care routine. Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells on its own, but sometimes they won’t shed completely. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin to prevent dry, flaky patches and clogged pores.

While you may already know that exfoliating leaves your skin bright and glowing, you may not realize that it has so many more benefits. Regular exfoliation helps beneficial ingredients penetrate your skin with ease. Plus, it boosts cell turnover and collagen production!

Chemical vs. Physical Exfoliants

Physical involve mechanical exfoliation like scrubbing. Physical exfoliants can be more harsh, so it’s important to be careful not to damage your skin with too rough a product (like a walnut powder, which can be very sharp). Look for a product with rounded naturally derived microbeads.

Chemical exfoliants use acids and enzymes to remove layers of dead skin. This can be in the form of a chemical peel or an at-home product.

Sometimes you don’t have to choose between the two! Image Skincare’s Ormedic Balancing Gel Polisher combines pomegranate enzymes, olive pit powder and bamboo spheres with alpha hydroxy acids in the form of a caviar lime extract. The result is remarkably glowing skin that is plump and youthful.

How often should I Exfoliate?

Its important to make sure that you are exfoliating enough, but not too much. It should be a regular part of your at-him skin care routine. Exfoliate right after cleansing and immediately apply serums and moisturizers for better ingredient penetration.

Whether you are using an exfoliating mask or scrub, you should limit your process to 2-3 times per week depending on your skin.

Exfoliating treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion at TimeLess Medical Spa in Ogden, Utah are excellent ways to increase cell turnover and remove dead skin in a way that can’t be done with at-home products. We recommend these treatments be done as often as every 4 weeks or seasonally, at the very least.

Ask TimeLess Master Esthetician what exfoliating products and treatments are best for your skin. Consultations are always free.

Best Way To Lose Weight Without Starving Yourself

It’s the start of a new year, and you may be thinking about ways to lose weight in Ogden UT.

The holiday binge eating has resulted in unwanted pounds for many Utah residents, and the clamor for ways to lose weight is high during this time of the year.

Before you embark on your weight loss program, you should keep in mind that it is not easy.

You need to be properly motivated and disciplined to get the benefits and results that you expect.

Every person who has gone on a “lose weight” journey has always hit some skids at some point.

Focus on the medical, social, and psychological benefits that you would gain if you succeed with your lose weight in 2020 journey.

For obese persons, take note that you don’t need to lose hundreds of pounds before you can enjoy the medical benefits of weight loss.

Just a few pounds off can give noticeable effects. Studies show that even a 5 to 10% drop in weight can change your health altogether.

Healthy Way to Shed Pounds

Rapid weight loss is not only unhealthy; it will set you up for binge eating that will mess up your weight loss plan.

It is hard for most people to lose more than one to two pounds a week. Water loss may lower your weight, but this is only temporary and superficial.

Fat loss is what makes you look better in the long term.

There are ways to boost your weight loss journey by following tips on the best way to lose weight fast.

These tips won't require you to starve yourself, buy unsafe supplements, or spend hours in the gym.

We share some safe ways that will help you lose weight that can give you longer-lasting results.

Make Food Swaps

You may be eating fast food for years, and it would be hard to stick to an organic, paleo, and gluten-free overhaul at once.

For long-term results, you need to make small changes to your existing habits. If you eat a snack bar daily, swap your 300 calorie bar for a 150 calorie bar.

Eat Heavy Meals At Night

Research has shown that our bodies use up most of the calories we consume during the daytime. The problem is our lifestyle usually has our family meals and dinners scheduled after sunset.

Weight loss physician, Dr. Charlie Seltzer, proposes an alternative strategy: Eating a hearty meal at dinnertime.

You may run out of calories earlier as you go out to dinner, so you may fall victim to binge eating before bedtime.

The idea is to eat a lighter breakfast and lunch since most people who eat a meal before bed wakes up feeling full.

Research shows that balanced bedtime meals may promote steady blood sugar levels the next day. This also helps in the regulation of your appetite.

This approach is easier to do because people eat more at the end of the day and socialize more.

Get More Protein From Lean Sources

Protein is one of the essential weapons in your weight loss battle. This is partly due to expending more energy when you digest protein compared to carbs and fat. Dr. Seltzer recommends that you match your protein intake with naturally-occurring fats.

Lean protein sources like chicken breast and whitefish have fewer calories than burgers and bacon. Paired with greek yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese, and you get more calories per serving.

You should also eat your protein with sugar. When eaten alone, sugar floods the bloodstream and is removed quickly, which leaves you hungry or tired.

Protein delays the release of sugar into the bloodstream, which makes you feel satiated much longer.

Eat Carbs With High Fiber Content

Similar to protein, fiber also slows the rate in which your body burns through carb calories, so you feel full for a more extended period. Eating fiber also maintains a steady blood sugar level, which is why fiber is always connected to weight loss.

You should eat whole grain bread rather than white bread. Fruits that contain fiber are also an excellent addition to your diet rather than candy bars.

Manage Stress

Stress eating is common for many people, which is why there is a vast number of obese men and women in our society. This is due to the stress hormone cortisol, which boosts your appetite for sugary and fatty foods.

A 2007 Obesity study shows that chronic stress exposure leads to higher cortisol concentrations in adults.

This is why a weight loss plan should always include a stress-management tactic.

You can try meditation, listening to relaxing music, and prayer. Just make sure that you eat because you are hungry and not because you are stressed out.

Get More Sleep

Dr. Seltzer says that "Poor sleep is associated with slower metabolism."

According to a 2016 Sleep study, the sleep deprivation activates the same brain receptors responsible for marijuana food binges.

Sleep an extra 30 minutes every night on top of your 6 to 8 hour period of rest.

10 Specific Goals for Better Health in 2020

Every new year people set goals and make resolutions and, more often than not, at least one of those goals is to lose weight. According to a study by the University of Scranton, about 80 percent will fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions. That sounds really discouraging, but don’t give up hope!

Be Specific and Realistic with Your Goals

When it comes to setting goals, it’s all about being specific and realistic. It’s important to set goals that are much more targeted than “lose weight,” or more achievable than “start going to the gym every day.” If you set broad and unrealistic goals you’re bound to be frustrated and disappointed. Which will likely end up with you feeling like a failure and giving up.

First of all, it’s important to be realistic. Remember that slow and steady weight loss is healthy and sustainable. That means you aim to lose just 1-2 pounds a week. Your body may naturally lose more in the beginning due to the shift in your diet. While that may feel exciting, don’t expect to see large numbers drop consistently. Eventually, you may also experience plateaus on your journey, and that is okay. Do not expect perfection. Expect to give it your best, and offer yourself some grace.

Second, be specific. Health is about more than weight loss. Instead of setting a weight loss goal in pounds, make specific health goals. Making a variety of changes to your diet and lifestyle will help you to lose weight.

A Goal Unwritten is Just a Wish

Lastly, remember that a goal unwritten is just a wish. So, create a goal journal or a vision board for what you aim to accomplish in 2020.

It is important that you come up with your own list of goals that work for you. We’ve come up with 10 ideas to get you started.

Here are 10 Specific Goals for Better Health in 2020:

  1. Walk briskly for 30 minutes 5 days per week.
  2. Log your food every day to ensure you’re reaching your protein goal and staying within your calorie budget.
  3. Gym membership? Go to your gym for an hour twice this week.
  4. Lose 5% of your body fat in one month.
  5. If you are at a restaurant, cut your meal in half and put it in a to-go container when your meal is served.
  6. Reach your step goal 5 days per week (unless recovery is necessary).
  7. Use your blender bottle to drink 3 full bottles of water everyday (or half your body weight in ounces).
  8. Cut your soda intake in half this week, and in half again next week.
  9. Find a new healthy recipe to make once a week.
  10. Meal prep every weekday.

What is Intermittent Fasting?

If you follow health trends, then you have likely heard people buzzing about Intermittent Fasting (IF). So, you’re probably wondering what it is and how it works. IF is trending right now, but it isn't new. There are new studies showing its worth when combined with a healthy and balanced diet.

First, what is Intermittent Fasting?

At TimeLess, we suggest IF to our clients in addition to our healthy eating program. IF is a process of eating during a shorter period of the day or fasting for a 24 hour period twice a week. We recommend our clients fast with the 16:8 method. This means you eat for 8 hours and fast for 16. For example, you would eat between 11AM – 7PM or from 12PM to 8PM. During the fast it is important to drink plenty of water, and black coffee is also permitted.

How does IF work?

Monique Tello, MD, a contributing editor to The Harvard Health Blog, breaks it down perfectly:

The food we eat is broken down by enzymes in our gut and eventually ends up as molecules in our bloodstream. Carbohydrates, particularly sugars and refined grains (think white flours and rice), are quickly broken down into sugar, which our cells use for energy. If our cells don’t use it all, we store it in our fat cells as, well, fat. But sugar can only enter our cells with insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas. Insulin brings sugar into the fat cells and keeps it there.

Between meals, as long as we don’t snack, our insulin levels will go down and our fat cells can then release their stored sugar, to be used as energy. We lose weight if we let our insulin levels go down. The entire idea of IF is to allow the insulin levels to go down far enough and for long enough that we burn off our fat.

In addition to lowering insulin levels, fasting can increase norepinephrine release from the brain. Fasting may also boost your metabolism with all of the changes in hormones.

Who should incorporate IF into their diet?

Intermittent Fasting can be easily incorporated into any diet. It may be great for weight loss, an easy health boost, and great for those at risk for diabetes. IF is not recommended for those with a history of an eating disorder. While it is important that you are under the supervision of physician whenever you restrict your calories, it is especially necessary with IF if you have advanced diabetes or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Overall, IF can be a great way to boost your health or increase weight loss. Ask your weight loss counselor or doctor if Intermittent Fasting is right for you.

Causes and Treatment of Acne

Acne remains the bane of both older people and teenagers. No matter how old you are, your acne can be treated, and the looks of your skin improved. At Timeless Medical Spa in Ogden, Utah, Dr. Brent Williams MD uses three primary treatment methods to clear up your acne-prone skin and keep it glowing and beautiful. Please continue reading to discover more facts about these skin-clearing techniques.

Chemical Peels

During a chemical peel, the skin becomes exfoliated using hydroxyl acid. A series of chemical peels remain employed in the case of mild to moderate acne. These peels have the added benefit of removing fine lines from the face as well as fading skin discolorations. A facial might also get included in the price of your peel.

Superficial dermatological peels rapidly exfoliate your skin which makes dead skin cells shed quickly. Peels keep hair follicles from becoming plugged with excess oil and dead skin cells, which keeps pores clean and pimple-free.

Your skincare provider will use glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or a beta hydroxy acid peel to remove excess dead skin cells and keep your skin glowing. Please be sure to get your doctor’s approval before you get a chemical peel to eliminate possible drug interactions.

Microdermabrasion

During this process, a dermatologist sprays tiny exfoliating crystals on your body to remove a layer of skin. A newer and smoother layer of skin grows in to replace the area removed to give you clearer skin. The technique treats acne, dull skin, and discolored areas of the face.

If you have acne, pox marks or scars caused by accidents, using microdermabrasion improves the way your skin looks and feels. Any person of any skin color can use this process to help make subtle improvements in scarring and acne. Your skin may appear red for a short time but should recover within 24 hours.

Facials

At Timeless Medical Spa, we offer a variety of facials to rejuvenate your skin and give you back the healthy glow of youth. One of our specialty treatments is the Acne Facial. You can benefit from the acne facial no matter how young or old you are. While giving you the Acne Facial, you’ll also receive tips and education about how to care for your skin and clear up acne.
At Timeless Spa, we can show you how to take care of your skin and keep it looking bright and vibrant. Please phone us today for more information on treating your acne at our spa.

How-to Transition your Skin to Fall

Crisp mornings, cozy sweaters, falling leaves and pumpkin spice everything; it’s officially fall! And as the season transitions, so should your skin care routine. We've got the details on how-to transition your skin to fall.

At home, your focus should be on exfoliating away summer’s dead skin. Try an exfoliating mask or scrub 2-3 times a week. As it starts getting colder, you’ll want to use a thicker moisturizer and cleanser to add more hydration to your skin. Lightening serums and retinols are great to pull into your routine in the winter as your risk for sun exposure goes down. However, that does not mean that you go lax on SPF; you still need sun protection every day.

Throughout the autumn and winter months, it is a great time to meet with your esthetician to focus on more aggressive treatments that aimed at exfoliating or treating hyperpigmentation, since you aren’t at as high risk for sun exposure.

We asked our TimeLess Master Estheticians for their favorite fall treatments and here is what they suggested:

Chemical Peel

There is a reason estheticians refer to autumn as “peel season.” This go-to exfoliation treatment can be curated for any and all skin-types and made to meet individual needs. If you’ve never had an esthetic treatment before, this is a great place to start.

During a chemical peel treatment, various acids are used to break down the dead surface layer of the skin. This process removes impurities, resulting in a smoother surface and overall appearance and stimulation of collagen production. Chemical Peels also aid in clearing blemishes and help fade hyperpigmentation.

Dermaplaning

If you follow beauty trends, then chances are that you have heard about dermaplaning. This deep exfoliating treatment is all the rage right now.

Dermaplaning treatments use a surgical scalpel to gently scrape away unwanted hair and dead skin. It is completely painless. This actual treatment is quick, so it pairs great with a luxurios mask, like Image Skincare’s O2 Lift, and allows the product to be better absorbed into the skin. You are left with silky smooth skin and a gorgeous glow.

Hollywood Laser Facial

This new laser treatment is just what you need for glowing, celebrity-like skin. Address pigmentation, fine lines and texture issues with our new Hollywood Laser Facial.

A charcoal mask is spread over the skin and then lasered off for a deep exfoliation, resurfacing and to target pigment. Following treatment, it will feel a bit like you’ve had a bad sunburn. Downtime is about  3-5 days. When it’s healed, your skin will look absolutely glowing.

CO2RE

If you are looking for a treatment option to aggressively address your skin in one treatment, CO2 is the right one. Typically a once a year treatment, CO2 skin resurfacing is designed to precisely target and effectively treat the skin's surface, middle and deep dermal levels.

CO2RE is a versatile fractional CO2 system, and the latest in skin resurfacing technology. The laser incorporates an innovative scanning technology for skin resurfacing through fractional
ablation. The CO2RE procedure is ideal for the treatment of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring, benign lesions, and skin tags. It is the most aggressive treatment, with downtime of about 1-2 weeks.

Call your Master Esthetician and set up a skin consultation to determine the best exfoliating treatment for you to transition your skin to fall.

Microblading: Woke up like this!

Do you always put on eyebrow makeup and get late at work? Or wanting to have a “woke up like this” feeling every day? Well, the new trend in beautifying your eyebrow is now here! Never worry again on how they look you every morning. Never have that messy look after sweating. Microblading is the new trend nowadays-- it gives you that natural look ever.

Your eyebrows is one of the best assets you should have. Thin eyebrows make your face so dull and incomplete, thick one is not good looking as well. This process, it gives your eyebrow the look of “just so perfect” isn’t it self satisfying?

So today, we will answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Eyebrow Embroidery:

FAQs in Microblading

Eyebrow Embroidery Ogden UT, Microblading Ogden UT, medical spa Ogden UT

What is Microblading?

How long does the procedure last?

  • The initial session only takes around 2 ½ hours to 3 hours. The very first step is that the Brow Technician will shape your eyebrow and would seek your approval. Second steps should the style already approved, you will choose your preferred pigment color. Once you have chosen your preferred pigment color, the process begins.

Moreover, after the first session is a follow-up session that usually takes a month or a month and a half after the first session. Such follow-up session will approximately take 1 ½ to 2 hours.

How long is the healing process?

  • After each session, it is normal that the microbladed area to be slightly red and appears to be dark-- that’s totally fine, it is really part of the healing process. As it heals, redness will fade gradually. During the healing time, do not scrub or always touch the area as it may be infected. Overall, the healing will fully set in about 4 weeks. After the healing process, the microbladed area will turn into its normal color.

Is the process painful?

  • The pain that you will feel during the process very much tolerable. This is due to the topical anesthesia applied to the area to make it numb and also reapplied as the process goes by. As everyone differently reacts to the anesthesia, the process is described as a light cat scratches the area. After the process, you may ask for your Brow Technician if you need to intake some medicines for you not to feel any pain at all.

How long will it last?

  • Depending on the skin condition, it typically lasts 1 to 3 years. Skincare is a must while flanking your beautiful eyebrow-- by doing so, the lasting effect will be prolonged.

What are the pre-care procedures?

  • Prior to the procedure, you are advised not to do the following:
    • Do not intake any alcoholic drinks three days before the procedure.
    • DO not intake Aspirin or Ibuprofen three days before the procedure.
    • Avoid tanning your skin so the Bro Technician can really assess your skin tone and conditions.
    • Avoid any face scrubs or chemical peels two weeks before the procedure.

What are the post-care procedures?

  • Post-care procedures are advised by your Brow Technician. It is strongly to follow your Technician’s advice as it will lead to its best results.

Generally, avoid putting on strong chemicals on your face most especially the microbladed area as it will shorten its lifespan.

Debunking the Myths about Botox

It is probably safe to assume that you have heard of "Botox." You may even have friends that have told you about it, or know some who have it, but haven't told you. But what do you really know about it? Do you know that "Botox" is a brand name? There are actually four FDA-approved neuromodulator injectables for the treatment of frown lines. When injected, Botox® CosmeticDysport®, Xeomin® and, the new Jeuveau® allow your muscles to relax, smoothing wrinkles and taking years off of your face. With a great deal of publicity, however, comes a great deal of misinformation, and there are many people that believe some unfortunate myths.

There are a lot of myths out there about these injectables. Let's debunk the most common myths we hear:

Botulinum injections are toxic.

The Truth: While it’s true that the name BOTOX comes from its active ingredient – botulinum toxin – the toxin is in such small amounts that it is incapable of spreading outside of the treated area.

Botox causes undue stress on muscles.

The Truth: Botulinum injection treatments actually do exactly the opposite – they relax muscles! Our skin wrinkles because facial muscles are unable to relax, even while we’re sleeping. Botulinum injections step in and allow the muscles to relax temporarily, easing the stress and smoothing the wrinkles.

Botox is addictive.

The Truth: Study after study has shown that Botox is not addicting on a physiological level. This myth emerges from people who return for treatments again and again. However, it is only necessary to return for more injections since the treatments last temporarily, and the results are so great!

The simple truth is, Botox® and Dysport® have been used cosmetically for more than a decade. While Xeomin® and Jeuveau® are newer than the other two, they are just as safe and effective.

To learn more about Botox®, Dysport® Xeomin® or Jeuveau®, schedule a free consultation with Dr. Williams or Brandie, RN.

But with the laser hair removal, these bumps will surely go away and will never recur. With the use of this technology, laser lights penetrate deep down your skin and target the tube-shaped sacs called hair follicles, and preventing or delaying future growths.

Benefit # 2 | No Painful Feeling.

In the use of laser light beams in hair removal, you will never experience any pain, in fact, there is a cooling gel being applied to the skin-- but not an ordinary gel, such gel will not only give a cool feeling but will also help the process get faster and smoother. On some rare cases, there would be some minimal discomfort on some small skin areas after the treatment but the dermatologist will give you some gel to apply or medicines to take so that skin discomfort would be gone immediately.

Benefit # 3 | Get the Results in Just a Few Sessions.

In just a few sessions, you will immediately notice the results you are trying to goal. At first, the results will not be the one you are really trying to goal, but eventually, as you continue on succeeding sessions, results will gradually be seen and realized. Lasering the hair will gradually damage your hairs’ follicle but when you are finished with all the advised sessions, your desired results will be achieved.

Removed or reduced hair growth is not the only goal in hair removal, the ultimate goal of hair removing is getting flawless-- flawless means bumpless skins, smooth skin, blemish-free skin, and unimpaired skin. Thus, lasering your hair would only mean having a lesser, finer, and lighter skin-- and not totally getting rid of your hair as it is still an important thing in your body.
